She attended Ante-Natal Clinic in January, 1929—4 months
pregnant—pale, emaciated woman, with bad varicose ulcer on right
leg. She complained of sleeplessness, and was terrified at the
thought of pregnancy. She was put on Sunlight Treatment and
after a few attendances there was a marked improvement in her
general condition. She slept better, her colour improved, and
nervousness disappeared. The varicose ulcer on her leg
completely healed. She continued with Sunlight throughout
pregnancy. In May, 1929, she was admitted to the Maternity
Home for the confinement. She had a very easy labour lasting
5 hours, and was delivered of a full-time healthy male child,
weighing 8-lbs. 11½-ozs. The puerperism was normal. The
mother and child have since attended the Child Welfare Clinic.
She was able to breast-feed her baby for 9 months and both are
doing well.
In regard to cases referred from the Infant Welfare
Centres, the following conditions reacted very well to Sunlight
Treatment:—Early Rickets, Anaemia, Marasmus, and Debility
following Infectious Diseases.
The best results were obtained in cases of Early Rickets
and Anaemia. These babies came usually from the poorest
overcrowded homes and their condition was primarily due to
absence of fresh air and sunlight. We had as controls many
cases where the mothers were unable to find time to bring the
babies to the Sunlight Centre, and had to depend on Medicinal
Measures only for treatment. In comparison the Sunlight babies
showed much better results.
Very satisfactory results were obtained in cases of
Bronchitis and Anaemia. The most noticeable result is the
increased sleep of the babies from the commencement of the
treatment. The following notes of certain cases will be of
interest: —
1. Child 2 years 9 months.—Sent for treatment anaccount
of continuous colds. During treatment from October to March
she had only one cold.
2. Child 1 year.—Under weight, gaining slowly, constipated. In two months treatment gained 2-libs., cut 4 teeth,
constipation improved.
3. Child 1 year 1 month.—Debility and Anaemia. In
3 months treatment gained 2-1bs., and became much firmer.
Treatment was discontinued for a month, during which time
the child lost 6-ozs. On recommencing treatment 14-ozs. were
gained in a month.
