The 22 instances where matters needed attention included
18 cases where the premises generally, or kitchen and scullery
particularly, needed cleansing and lime-washing, 2 where the
sanitary arrangements were defective, and 2 where shop fittings
such as chopping blocks and gutting benches were either dirtv
or defective.
In addition to the periodical visits and inspections of food
shops, etc., supervision is also exercised on Saturday evenings
and Bank Holidays.
It is interesting to note that the Borough is again becoming
an important centre with regard to the distribution of food.
The Cattle Market, Deptford, which was formerly used for the
slaughtering, etc., of animals, and its attendant trades, is at
present a depot of considerable importance for the landing,
storing and distribution of foreign meat. In addition to this,
other foods are received and distributed from this depôt.
The usual routine has been followed whereby oondemned
carcasses have been released only on the certificate of the
Medical Officer of Health and on the distinct understanding
that such carcasses would not be used for human consumption.
Palmers Cold Air Stores, Ltd., who are the principal
business house in the Market, have kindly furnished me with
information regarding number of carcasses, etc., which passed
through their Store during the year:—
Lambs 283,316
Sheep 116,074
Crops 7,893
Hinds 19,628
Fores 1,504
Pigs 5,478
Offal (various) 30,000 parcels.
Street Traders.—The Regulations made in accordance
with the provisions of the London County Council (General
Powers) Act, 1927, requiring the licensing by this Council of
all persons who are engaged in street trading, continue to
operate. This licence shows the place where the trader not only
sells his goods, but also where they are stored, and in this
way we are able to pay particular attention to the premises and
the manner in which articles of food intended for sale from
barrows and stalls in the streets are stored and prepared for sale.
