Scavenging and Refuse Disposal.—The collection of
house, etc., refuse in the Borough is under the control of the
Borough Surveyor, who has kindly supplied me with the
following information relating to the disposal of refuse.
The approximate amount of refuse collected in the
Borough during the year ended 31st December, 1929, was
21,500 tons, giving an average daily collection of 77 tons. Of
the total refuse collected, the Refuse Disposal Plant dealt with
approximately 9,700 tons, giving a daily figure of about 38 tons.
The remainder of the refuse was disposed of by barging and
tipping.
A full description of the Screen and Disposal Plant was
given in the Annual Report for 1925.
Health Propaganda.—The arrangements made with the
Proprietors of " Better Health," whereby they supply us with
2,000 copies of their journal each month, continue to be in
force.
This magazine, which is issued in the form of a Greenwich
Edition with special articles of local interest, serves a very
useful purpose in keeping the attention of the public on health
matters generally.
Copies are distributed to all members of the Greenwich
Borough Council, local medical men, midwives, dentists, headmasters and head-mistresses of the various schools, boy scout
organisations, to large firms for the issue to their employees,
and also, of course, there are copies available at the various
Welfare Centres and Tuberculosis Dispensary.
