HOUSING
General:
According to the data provided by the Registrar General, the total
number of structurally separate dwellings occupied at the time of the census
in April, 1961, was 9,262. Taking into account the numbers of premises
demolished and those newly erected or converted since that date, it is
estimated that the total number of dwellings in the Borough at the end of
1964 was 9,540 disregarding uninhabitable properties.
The dwellings in the Borough consist of approximately 7,330 flats
and 2,210 houses. The proportion of flats has increased considerably in
recent years following the demolition of many unfit houses and the erection
of flats on the sites.
As a matter of interest, the age of the dwellings has been estimated
as follows:—
Percentage built before 1850. 7
Percentage built between 1850 and 1875. 20

Percentage built between 1919 and 1945. 9
