HAIRDRESSERS:
The Council fixed the 1st February 1956, as the appointed day
on which to bring into operation the provisions of the London
County Council (General Powers) Act, 1954, requiring the registration
of persons carrying on the business of Hairdresser or Barber,
and the registration of the premises used, and made Bye-laws for
the purpose of securing the cleanliness of registered premises
including the instruments, towels and equipment used therein, and
the cleanliness of the persons employed both in regard to themselves
and their clothing. At the end of the year there was a
total of 46 registered premises in the Borough As a result of a
special survey carried out, action was taken where necessary to
enforce the requirements of the Bye-laws, but there is still room
for further improvements. In all 111 visits were made to hairdressers
and barbers during 1961.
DISINFECTION:
Disinfection is carried out where infectious disease has
occurred; upon request or when such action isconsidered necessary.
The usual method is to spray the rooms and contents with
diluted formalin, and in some instances the bedding etc, is
removed to the Health Centre for treatment in the steam disinfectors.
In the more serious cases of infection fumigation of the
premises is carried out by using a maxture of formaldehyde and
potassium permanganate after the rooms have been totally sealed.
However, during the year 1961 only two premises required this
type of fumigation whilst 179 sprayings were carried out as shown
below.
