Director).
During 1959 the Mass Radiography Unit examined 42,996 males
and 24,114 females - making a total of 67,110, Up to the end of
1959 the Unit has examined 561,108 persons since it commenced
operations in May 1960.
66 cases of significant tuberculosis have been discovered
during the year under review as well as 14 cases of carcinoma of
the lung. All clinics have recorded their sputum findings and
22 cases had a positive sputum.
The Unit has functioned at the Mass Radiography Centre,
20 Golden Lane, E.C.I, for about nine months in the year, and
during the remaining months it visited firms, etc, within its
zone, vis. the City of London, and the Metropolitan Boroughs of
Finsbury and Shoreditch, Of the firms examined during 1959 many
were small and new firms for it has long been the practice of
this Unit not to overlook the smaller firms.
Since the introduction of our new procedure the number of
doctors' referrals has greatly increased and the service is greatly
appreciated by those general practitioners who use it.
The function of a Mass Radiography Unit is to discover
tuberculosis and other chest ailments while in the early stages
when more easily curable. Examinees, other than doctor's referrals,
attend the Unit by prior appointment as being of great convenience
to all concerned, and are informed of the result of their examination.
The service is free, reliable and confidential, and is
available to all those (above the age of 15) who are either
working or living within the Unit's zone. Pull information can
be obtained from the Organising Secretary, Mass Radiography Unit
6D, Finsbury Health Centre, Pine Street, E C 1. (Tel. TERminus
