Legal Proceedings:
During the year proceedings were instituted against the
owner of No. 278, City Road in respect of the use of the basement
rooms in contravention of a Closing Order. The summons was
adjourned sine die to enable the owner to complete the work
required to render the rooms fit for human habitation
Clearance Areas:
The position obtaining at the end of the year in respect of
individual Clearance Areas is summarised below:-
1. St. James Row-8 premises:
Five houses still remained to be cleared.
2. Galway Street-168 premises:
Redevelopment of this area was in active progress.
3. Herbal Hill/Herbal Place-7 premises:
The Clearance Order was confirmed by the Minister in respect
of 2 premises. Action under Part II was recommended for
the others which was subsequently taken.
4. Field Place-7 premises:
The rehousing of the tenants had not yet been commenced.
5. Medcalf Place-15 premises:
The rehousing of the tenants had not yet been commenced.
6. King Square(No.l) Area-26 premises:
The Council's Clearance Order, was confirmed with one
modification.
7. King Square(No.2) Area-292 premises
8. King Square(No.3) Area-25 premises
A public enquiry was held in May and these Compulsory Purchase
Orders were subsequently confirmed by the Minister with
modification.
9. Donegal Street Area -42 premises:
An inspection was carried out and a representation made to
the Council in June 1959 of this area, and a Clearance
Order was made by the Council.
10. Buxton Buildings-28 premises:
These flats were included in the agreed slum clearance
programme but on grounds of expediency each individual flat
was made the subject of a closing order, and rehousing of
the tenants by the London County Council was carried out at
the end of the year.
