HOUSING
General:
The estimated number of dwellings in the borough at the end
of 1959 was 9,745 consisting of 3,179 houses, 6,548 flats and 18
huts. The houses are mostly privately owned. Ownership of the
flats is as follows:-

London County Council 559
City Corporation 266
Metropolitan Police 126
Housing Associations 2,644
Private Ownership 1,146
New Accommodation:
The following flats were constructed during 1959:-
By the Pinsbury Borough Council Nil
By Private Owners:
33/35 Myddelton Square(conversion) 10 flats
Arlington House, Arlington Way 19 flats
Two certificates of habitation under Section 95 of the Public
Health(London) Act 1936 were issued during 1959 in connection
with the new or converted premises mentioned above.
In addition, the redevelopment of the extensive Galway
Street Clearance Area, was well under way at the end of the year.
Housing Act 1957:
Basement Rooms
Steps are taken as and when necessary to prevent the
re-occupation of unsatisfactory basement rooms by making Closing
Orders, When information is received of the pending rehousing of
families living in basements, inspection of the premises is
carried out to ascertain whether the rooms could be made to comply
substantially with the Housing Act standards at reasonable expense.
If not, an official Representation is made to the Council and in
most cases a Closing Order results.
