Population:
It is estimated that there has been little change in the
population or in its age structure in recent years.
Births:
The birth rate was almost identical with that of the country
as a whole.
The illegitimate birth rate was slightly higher being 1.3 as
against 12 the previous year.
Still-births:
The still-birth rate was lower at 0.38 as against 0.54 in the
previous year.
Deaths:
Although the standardised death rate of 11.2 was higher than
in the previous year, it was still below the figure of 11.6 for
England & Wales as a whole.
Maternal Mortality:
There were no maternal deaths during the year.
Infant Mortality:
The rate of 15.9 formed a low record for the Borough and was
probably one of the lowest in the country.
Causes of Death:
The break that occurred in 1958 of the steady increase in
the deaths from cancer of the lung and coronary diseases, was
unfortunately temporary only, and there has been a small increase
on the 1957 figure for deaths from cancer of the lung and those
from coronary diseases were very similar. The number of deaths
from other forms of cancer however, remain almost the same.
