Consignments of Continental and Scandinavian offals and tinned
hams continued to be imported into the Borough and condemnations of
these took place on several occasions.
The collection of unsound meat and other foodstuffs continues to
be collected satisfactorily by the contractors. Messrs Henson and
Burbidge, Matusa Works, Beckton, who render down the foodstuffs for
technical purposes only.
During the year 242 certificates were issued for the export of
meat bacon and meat essence. Several of these certificates were issued
for the export of boneless and bone-in quarters of cow beef to Italy.
Germany and Bermuda.
A total of 1,115 visits were made to the retail butchers shops
and stalls in the borough.
During the course of the year the meat inspector examined 1,033
bags of New Zealand Beef Livers and 620 bags of Uruguayan Beef Livers
for a parasitic hydatis cyst, -the Echinococcus Granulosus. Each bag.
containing about 6-8 livers was slightly defrosted and two or three
incisions were made into the substance of every liver. In several
Uruguayan beef livers as many as 10 cysts were counted in each liver.
Those livers which contained the hydatis cysts were condemned.

Representations by the Council were made to the Secretaries of
the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Agriculture. Fisheries and Food,
and in September a communication was received from the Agricultural
Branch of the New Zealand Government, that the exportation of infected
livers would be prohibited from New Zealand.
Bakehouses
The year 1958 was the fourth of the quinquennial periods since
the enactment of the Factories Act which requires the standard of
suitability of basement bakehouses, to be reviewed. Detailed inspections
were made of the 11 basement bakehouses in the Borough and schedules
of works were prepared and served. As a result of this survey 4
basement bakehouses have now closed and the remaining 7 have satisfied
the requirements of the Council and certificates of suitability have
been granted.
