Informal samples of honey and borax, and glycerine of borax were
found to be deficient in borax. Formal samples were purchased with a
similar result and a letter was sent to the manufacturer requesting a
greater care in the preparation of these products.
A formal sample of Chocolate Coconut Tea squares was submitted
for analysis after a complaint had been received that the sweets had a
strong bitter taste. Examination showed that the goods were stale, and
the stock was surrendered and destroyed.
Food Complaints
22 complaints were received from members of the public during the
year in respect of alleged unsound or adultered food purchased from
shops in the Borough. In every case an investigation was carried out
and a report submitted to the Health Committee. Legal proceedings were
recommended in four instances all of which were successful. In the
remaining cases, actions appropriate to the circumstances were taken.
Legal Proceedings
The Council instituted legal proceedings under Section 2 of the Food & Drugs Act 1955 as under:-
