when carrying out an examination on the premises of Union International
Company, the Unit X-rayed the staffs of twenty of their associated
companies.
The scheme for the examination of Teaching Staffs of the London
County Council, commented upon in the previous Annual Report came
into operation at the beginning of 1956, and has worked quite smoothly.
Altogether the Unit X-rayed 535 teachers representing 93 schools in
Divisions 3,4 and 5,
Of the firms examined during 1956 a high proportion consisted of
small and new firms,, Of the total number X-rayed about 42% had not
been X-rayed before or been examined during the past three years.
The object of a Mass Radiography Unit is to discover tuberculosis
and other chest diseases in the early stages which will result in an
earlier cure. By the adoption of an appointments system the Unit is
able to examine large numbers of people in the minimum of time.
Examinees, except when attending for a large film, are X-rayed over
their clothes. All volunteers receive the result of their X-ray
within a week of their examination. The Service is free, reliable
and confidential, and the Organising Secretary Mass Radiography Unit
6D, Finsbury Health Centre Pine Street London E.C.1. (Telephone No.
TERminus 0031 Ext. 9) will be pleased to send full particulars of the
Service to firms and individuals who may be interested.
