DISEASES NOTIFIABLE IN FINSBURY
Diphtheria
There were no cases or contacts during the year.
Smallpox
There were no cases or contacts during the year.
Enteric Fever(i) Typhoid
One case of typhoid fever occurred in a man aged 48 years, who
developed the disease after returning from a holiday in Spain. He
was treated in hospital where all investigations were carried out and
made satisfactory progress. All contacts were kept under supervision
and remained well. There were no further contacts or cases during
1956.
Enteric Fever(ii) Paratyphoid
One case of paratyphoid 'A' was notified in 1956, but the final
diagnosis was Salmonella Stanleyville. There were two contacts of a
case of Paratyphoid 'B' which were kept under supervision and remained
well.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum
Two cases were notified. Both responded well to treatment and
no blindness developed.
Puerperal Pyrexia
Finsbury cases occurring in hospital are notified in the area in
which the hospital is situated; one such case occurred in 1956. The
patient responded to treatment and made satisfactory progress.
Meningococcal Infections
There were two notified cases of meningococcal infections during
1956. Both patients were severely ill, one was a contact of a case
of meningococcal infection, in the other case the source of infection
was unknown. The contacts in both instances remained well. One
Finsbury resident developed a sudden onset of severe illness from an
unknown source of infection whilst in hospital. The patient subsequently
recovered and all known contacts remained well.
