Food Hygiene Regulations
Following the coming into force of the Food Hygiene Regulations,
a circular letter was addressed to the occupiers of all food premises
in the borough during January 1956 informing them of the new legislation
and requesting their co-operation in its implementation.
Apart from visits to certain food premises for special purposes
it was decided to survey in turn by type of business, all the premises
in the borough subject to the Regulations commencing with restaurants,
cafes and snack bars (excluding public houses).
A detailed inspection was carried out by the Public Health (Food)
Inspectors of all the 161 premises coming within this category.
During the interview with the occupier the more obvious contraventions
of the Regulations observed were outlined. At the same time a copy
of a "Notice to those engaged in the handling of food" was given to
the proprietor for display on the premises.
Where contraventions were found an informal letter was forwarded
to the occupier asking for his co-operation in the securing of a high
standard of Food Hygiene in Finsbury and an observance of all statutory
requirements. This letter also informed the occupier that any
advice desired could be obtained from the Food Inspector responsible
for the initial inspection.
In view of the possible responsibility of an owner of premises
under the Food and Drugs Act 1955 a further letter was sent in appropriate
cases to the owner of the premises informing him of certain
structural alterations required and asking for his co-operation.
Although it is difficult to sub divide the above premises into
categories of hygienic standards, a rough classification would be as
under:
11% Good
46% Fair
43% Bad

The survey disclosed the following interesting data:

No. of restaurants and snack bars161
Approximate no. of main meals served per day9,770
