The L.C.C. Tuberculosis Health Visitor—seconded to the
Chest Clinic—made 1,059 visits to homes in the Borough during the
year.
Each case was visited with the view to tracing the source of
infection, and advising on the prevention of the disease spreading.
Advice and other assistance was given where necessary.
Disinfection was carried out—by the Finsbury Borough Council
—in a large number of cases.
Mass Radiography Unit 6D.
(Information kindly provided by Dr. W. D. R. Thompson, Medical
Director.)
During 1953 the Mass Radiography Unit 6D has provided its
normal Service to the area for which it is responsible, viz., the City
of London and the Metropolitan Boroughs of Finsbury and
Shoreditch. The total number examined during the year was 60,225,
comprising 33,913 males and 26,312 females. Active tuberculosis
has been found in 85 cases, which represents 1.4 per thousand
examined.
The Unit was static at the special accommodation provided by
the City of London—The Mass Radiography Centre, 20, Golden
Lane, E.C.1—for a large part of the year, during which period it
examined workers and residents within the zone of the Unit. A very
large number of firms, both small and large, as well as private
individuals, were X-rayed at the Centre.
During the period when the Unit was "mobile" a number of
City firms were visited which could offer suitable accommodation for
X-ray equipment and could provide a sufficiency of examinees to
ensure that such a Survey would be economical. No Finsbury firms
were visited during the "mobile" period as it is proposed during
1954 to instal the Unit in Finsbury, e.g., the Finsbury Health Centre,
to which firms will be invited to send their staffs. The procedure of
prior appointments has been continued by the Unit as it is a method
particularly appreciated by firms who realise the considerable saving
in examinees' time, resulting from this procedure. All examinees
receive the result of their examination.
