Death Rates per 10,000 Population from some Principal
Causes.
Tuberculosis 3.1 (2.1); Cancer of lung 5.3 (3.4), Cancer of
breast 0.3 (1.9); All other Cancers 10.1 (13.6); Vascular lesions of
central nervous system 9.3 (15.8); Coronary Disease 14.6 (13.9);
Other heart diseases 11.8 (22.5); Bronchitis 12.9 (6.2); Accidents
3.1 (2.0); Suicide 1.7 (1.0).
The figures in brackets refer to England and Wales for 1952.
The rates from Tuberculosis, Cancer of the lung and particularly
Bronchitis, were considerably higher than the average for the
country, and those from Coronary Disease, Accidents and Suicide
were slightly higher. On the other hand the rates from other Cancers
and particularly Cancer of the breast, vascular lesions of the central
nervous system and other heart diseases were considerably lower.
Years of Life Lost.
A suggestion has been made that a better mental picture can be
obtained of the effect of the several causes of death by a consideration
of the years of life lost than of the deaths in age groups. The
Registrar General has prepared a table on this basis for 1952 of
which the following is an abstract:—
