Adulterated Samples were :—
1. Milk.—Of the 4 samples reported as adulterated, one was an
informal sample. When a corresponding delivery was sampled
formally the milk was satisfactory. 2 samples were very slightlv
deficient in fat, and warning letters were sent to the vendors.
In the case of the fourth adulterated sample, proceedings were
commenced but were subsequently withdrawn after legal argument
on technical points raised by the defence.
2. Meat Products.—Two informal samples of sausages were
adversely reported upon, both containing preservatives. The amount
in each instance was well within the limits prescribed by the Public
Health (Preservatives in Food) Regulations, but at the time of
purchase the sausages were not labelled and the prescribed Notice
was not seen in the shops. When visited by the Inspector both shops
were found to have notices which were not as conspicuous as they
might be. This was remedied immediately by the vendors. No
formal action was considered necessary.
3.—An informal and a formal sample of synthetic cherries for
use in cakes, etc., were reported as containing preservatives.
This commodity does not appear in the list of foods which may
contain preservatives, and the matter was referred to the Ministry of
Food, but it was not considered necessary to take further action.
4. Drugs.—Informal and formal samples of Camphorated Chalk
were found to be almost devoid of Camphor. The vendor was
prosecuted at Clerkenwell Magistrates' Court and fined £5 with
£5 5s. od. costs.
