Slum Clearance.
Further attention was given during the year to the possibility of
initiating small schemes for the clearance of the most unhealthy areas
in the Borough although the sites might not be of any value for
Rehousing.
A suggested 5-year Plan was submitted by the London County
Council which provided for the demolition of 395 premises. Discussions
took place on the basis of this plan and these were still proceeding
at the end of the year. It was, however, agreed that the programme
for this year should comprise—
(a) Bastwick Street—17 houses.
These were already being dealt with as individual properties.
(b) James' Gardens Area.
A representation of James' Gardens, Frye's Buildings and certain
adjoining derelict premises and outbuildings as a Clearance Area was
made towards the end of the year, and the Council gave formal
notice to the London County Council under Section 33 of the Housing
Act, 1936, that they proposed to consider the designation of this
Area as a Clearance Area.
Rehousing.
Applications for rehousing by the Borough Council are made
to the Housing Department and these are assessed according to their
need according to a points scheme. When accompanied by medical
