The area of the Borough is 587 acres.
The Registrar General's estimate of resident civilian
population was 27,990. In 1938 the estimated population
was 56,960.
The total number of live births belonging to the Borough
occurring during 1945 was 472, including 56 illegitimate
births, and consisting of 238 males and 234 females,
giving a birth rate of 16.9 per 1,000 population. The
total number of births during 1944 was 427. The birth
rate for England and Wales was 16.1 and for the London
Administrative County 15.7, per 1,000 civilian population.
The total number of still-births allocated to the Borough
during the year was 13. This figure represents 2.7% of
the total births, and .47 per 1,000 civilian population,
compared with .40 for London Administrative County and
.46 for England and Wales.
The total number of deaths belonging to the Borough
registered during 1945 was 480, consisting of 247 males
and 233 females, giving a death rate per 1,000 population
of 17,1. The total number of deaths for 1944 was 533.
