Report of Work of the Tuberculosis Care Committee,
for 1938.
Again this year we begin our report on the work of the Tuberculosis
Care Committee on a sad note. It is with very real regret that
we have to report the deaths of two valued members, who have
served on the Committee for many years—Councillor Mrs. Herlihy
and Mr. Elliott. Their interest in the work was marked and they will
be greatly missed.
Alterations in the regulations for the provision of clothing for
patients undergoing institutional treatment, foreshadowed in our last
report, and which were then being discussed by the Standing Conference
of Metropolitan Borough Tuberculosis Care Committees and
the London County Council, have been effected. These alterations
have improved the position. Again the usefulness of the Conference
has been demonstrated.
The usual meetings of this body have been held during the year
and our Chairman was re-elected as Chairman of the Conference.
Matters of interest to Care Committees have been discussed and much
useful information imparted.
During the year 187 cases have been recommended for treatment
and dealt with individually by the Care Committee.
1013 visits have been paid to patients at home and in hospital.
1074 persons have been interviewed at the Dispensary by the
Secretary.
982 cases have been considered by the Care Committee at their
meetings.
The sum of £106 19s. 4d. was raised by the sale of Christmas
Seals for the year 1938. Expenses amounted to £8 5s. 4d. The
amount collected is very slightly lower than last year, but in view of
the many and special calls for help from the general public, this year
particularly, we feel that the response was generous.
In addition, we have received financial aid and other forms of help
from the various organisations working in the Borough. For the
support and aid so generously extended by these bodies the Care
Committee desire to express their appreciation and to tender thanks.
The answers to the questions as to why we want money, and what
we do with it, will be found in the report now published annually by
the Care Committee.
