In addition , complaints concerning the condition of the following articles
of food were received in the Department during the year:-
Beetle in bread.
Foreign substance in bread.
Dirty bottle containing milk.
Quality of milk supplied.
Strong smell and taste of fish (skate)
Unsound meat.
Foreign substance in bread.
Piece of metal in fish finger.
Insect in bread.
Fly in frosting mixture.
Cake.
Colour of liver after frying.
Foreign substance in bread.
Defective tins of foodstuffs.
Mouldy bread.
Chocolate nut crunch.
Taste of liver.
Tobacco shreds in baby rice.
All these complaints were thoroughly investigated and all possible action
taken. In some instances they were not substantiated or were insufficient for action.
In others sampling procedure was carried out as necessary, or the traders concerned were
warned to prevent any re-occurrence.
Food and Drugs Act
During the year, Mr. H .A. Parkes , B.Sc. , F.R.I.C., of 161 , Bow Road ,
E.3, who had rendered such excellent service to the Council since his appointment as
Public Analyst in 1957 , announced his intention of retiring from the post at the end of
1962. Arising therefrom , and with the approval of the Minister of Agriculture , Fisheries
and Food , discussions were held with the London County Council on the possibility of
that Authority appointing a duly qualified officer from within its Scientific Branch to be
Public Analyst for Bethnal Green.
Out of a total of 206 samples (22 formal and 184 informal) examined by the
Public Analyst during 1962 , 8 samples were found to be adulterated , 2 formal and 6
informal.
