Contacts or Carriers of Infectious Disease
Circular 115/48 of the Ministry of Health empowers the Medical Officer
of Health to issue certificates to persons who have been in contact with or who are
carriers of infectious disease, thus enabling them to claim sickness benefit under the
National Insurance Acts, when he deems it necessary to require a contact or carrier
of infectious disease to stay away from work and during the year under review no
such certificate was issued.
There was, however, one case where the Medical Officer of Health
deemed it necessary to request a woman (who was not entitled to sickness benefit
under the National Insurance Acts) to discontinue work in an occupation connected
with food, whilst she was suffering from Sonne Dysentery. In accordance with
Section 26 of the London County Council (General Powers) Act, 1959, the person
concerned was compensated for the loss occasioned by her compliance with the
request.
