Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green.
Madam, Ladles and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my report on the health and
sanitary circumstances of the Borough for the year 1957.
Statistics. The Registrar General's estimate of the population
at mid-year was 50,940 as compared with the previous year's figure
of 52,280. The death rate was 11.3 as compared with 10.7 for

The infant mortality rate was 12.5 as compared with 24.0 for 1956.
Sanitary Circumstances. 17,344 visits were made to premises in
the Borough and the 4,582 sanitary defects found resulted in the

Legal proceedings were necessary in 39 instances.

of the Borough.
Details of the work of the Public Health Department is given

particulars of the personal health services which are administered

the year, I am also most grateful to my colleagues in other
