Ice Cream
During the year, 12 applications for registration for the sale
of ice cream were approved and 6 premises were removed from the
register upon ceasing the sale of ice cream. One application was
refused on the grounds that potatoes and other dusty root crops were
sold at the premises concerned.
At the end of the year there were 162 registered premises in the
Borough, 6 for manufacture, 155 for sale, and one for storage. 177
inspections of these premises were made during the year and in 16
instances notices were served concerning insanitary conditions.
14 samples of ice cream were submitted to the Methylene Blue
test and graded as follows:-
Grade 1 1
Grade 2 3
Grade 3 7
Grade 1 3
Where samples of ice cream made at premises in the Borough
receive unsatisfactory reports, the methods of manufacture and
handling are examined and improvements suggested as necessary.
When the place of manufacture is in another area the Local Authority
concerned is informed.
Food Poisoning
Seven notifications were received, 5 of which were confirmed
bacteriologlcally, the organism in each instance being of the
Salmonella group.
Poods suspected were cream cake, meat pie and scallops; no
portion of suspected food was available for bacteriological examination,
and in four of the cases no particular food was suspected.
There were no deaths.
Milk in Schools
The arrangements for sampling milk at London County Council
Schools continued without variation. A total of 13 samples were
submitted for examination, all of which satisfied the prescribed
tests.
