OUTWORK
Outworkers (Section 110(1)(c))
Twice yearly, February and August, the Factories Act, 1937>
requires all employers of outworkers in the Borough to forward
to the Local Authority a list giving the names and addresses of
all persons employed by them in homework during the previous six
months.
Of the 769 names of outworkers which appeared on the lists thus
received, 226 were given as residing within the Borough; In
addition 349 names of outworkers residing in Bethnal Green were
forwarded from other boroughs. These figures are approximately
double the number of individual workers as in the majority of cases
the same people are notified in February and August. Particulars
of those persons not resident in the Borough are forwarded to the
Boroughs concerned.
It may be of interest to mention that some of the homeworkers
resident in Bethnal Green are employed by firms whose places of
business are as far away as Leeds, Luton and Windsor, and local
firms have sent in lists containing outworkers resident in Axminster,
Eastbourne, Heckington (Lines.) and Bathavon (Somerset).
The following information of classes of work and numbers of
outworkers employed thereon, being Bethnal Green residents, is in
respect of the August lists, received from employers in the Borough,
and from other boroughs:-
