(15) Offensive Trades
There are five premises in the Borough registered for the
purpose of carrying on offensive trades. One being the business
of fur skin dresser, three poultry slaughterhouses and one animal
slaughterhouse, which had not been in use since 1939, had its
licence renewed during the year. 73 visits of inspection were made
to these premises.
(16) Pharmacy and Poisons Act, 1933
The provisions of the Act and the Poisons Rules relating to the
sale of poisons specified in Part II of the Poisons List were
administered during the year.
During 1954, the names of 50 persons (47 retentions and 3 new
applications) were entered on the Council's list of Persons entitled
to sell Part II Poisons.
All applications are investigated to ensure compliance with the
Act and Poisons Rules.
Six samples of disinfectants were taken during the year following
upon information from the Medical Superintendent of a local hospital
that several young children had recently been brought to his hospital
with symptoms of poisoning caused by drinking disinfectant. The
Public Analyst reported these disinfectants to contain from 2 to 4
per cent Chloroxylenols in soap solution and that, although labelled
"non-poisonous", they would cause illness if taken internally by a
child or adult. Owing to the attractive appearance of these
disinfectant fluids the Ministry of Health was informed of the Public
Analyst's report and. that it would not appear unreasonable to have
the warning "Not to be taken" added to the labels. The matter was
duly taken up by the Ministry of Health with the British Disinfectant
Manufacturers' Association.
(17) Rag Flock and Other Filling Materials Act, 1951
This Act provides for the licensing by the local authority of all
premises used for the manufacture and/or storage of filling materials
to which the Act applies, and for the registration of certain
premises where such materials are used in upholstering, stuffing or
lining of bedding, toys, baby carriages, etc.
