In this connection 267 visits to the premises were carried
out during 1951 and in 6 instances notices were served with regard
to insanitary conditions in some of these premises.
37 samples were submitted to the Methylene Blue test and
graded as follows
Grade 1 6
Grade 2 18
Grade 3 8
Grade 5
(g) Food Poisoning
There were no major outbreaks of food poisoning during the
year. 3 notifications were received, the illness alleged to be
due in one case to the consumption of Mussels. The cause was
unknown in the other two cases.
(h) Clean Food Campaign
The efforts of the Department for an improved standard of
hygiene in all matters relating to the manufacture, handling,
storage and distribution of food have continued throughout the
year.
During the year practically all the food premises in the
Borough were visited and although it was necessary in a few instances
to serve a Statutory Notice or to send a warning letter in
regard to non-compliance with Section 13 of the Food and Drugs
Act, 1938, it was, however, possible though the co-operative
relationship between the occupiers and the Department to secure
many desirable improvements without recourse to official action.
(i) Milk in Schools
The arrangements for sampling milk at L.C.C. Schools continued
without variation. A total of 22 samples were submitted for
examination 18 of which satisfied the prescribed tests. 3 samples
failed the Methylene-Blue Test and 1 the Phosphatase Test.
(j) Milk at Nurseries
One sample of milk submitted for examination passed the
necessary tests.
