Diphtheria.
Thirty-eight cases of Diphtheria were notified during the year.
In 18 cases (or 46.8 per cent.) the diagnosis was not confirmed,
leaving a total of 20 confirmed cases. The corresponding figures
for the previous year were 36 cases notified and 18 confirmed. Of
the confirmed cases in 1949, 4 were reported to have been immunised.
One case proved fatal in which no history of previous immunisation
had been reported.
Cancer.
The number of deaths certified as being due to cancer was 150
(81 male and 69 female), as compared with a total of 116 cases (62
male and 54 female) in 1948.
Tuberculosis.
During the year formal notifications under the Regulations
were received in respect of 87 cases of respiratory tuberculosis and
7 non-respiratory cases.
The following table gives details of the age and sex incidence
of these cases.
