has been forthcoming as a result of its implementation. The
London County Council will in future years be responsible
for the provision and maintenance of Day Nurseries and should
the present Columbia Market and Pritchard's Road Nurseries
revert to their former use as Nursery Schools it will be
necessary to provide new nurseries to take their place. There
is no evidence that the demand for day nursery accommodation
has decreased during the present year.
Considerable difficulty has been experienced in maintaining
an adequate and suitable staff particularly in
the cases of Health Visitors, and Sanitary Inspectors.
The shortage of Nursery Nurses, Students and Nursery
Teachers has continued but it is hoped that with the
adoption of the new salary scales this work will attract workers
in the future in sufficient numbers to allow the present nursery
accommodation to be used to its full.
By the retirement this year of Dr. H. Tylford Howell,
the Tuberculosis Officer, the Public Health Service and the
Borough have lost a physician of outstanding merit and one
who is held in high regard by the people of Bethnal Green.
Dr. Howell came to this district over 30 years ago and his
life has been devoted to the fight against tuberculosis. A man
of great charm and attainments, he will indeed be difficult to
replace.
I place on record my appreciation of the loyal and wholehearted
co-operation of the staff of the Public Health
Department, and of the courtesy and help which I have
received from the Chief Officers and Staff of other departments
of the Council. To the members of the Council generally and,
in particular, to the Chairman and Members of the Committees
with which the work of the Public Health Department is
especially concerned, may I offer my grateful thanks for their
co-operation, encouragement and courtesy at all times.
I have the honour to be, Your Worship, Ladies and
Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
Murdoch MacGregor.
