It should be noted that the Health Visiting- Staff
was 11 before the war, but only 7 at the end of 1947.
Notifications of Births.—Notices of 1,022 live
births and 19 stillbirths were received, 466 of which
were found to relate to other districts and were duly
transferred to the appropriate Medical Officer of
Health. Inward notifications relating to births to
Bethnal Green mothers outside the borough amounted
to 783 live births and 19 stillbirths, making the nett
total of live births notified 1,345.
Maternity Clinics.—The higher Birth Rate, existing
housing conditions and probably the higher public
standard with regard to midwifery have all contributed
to a very substantial increase in the volume of
work undertaken by the Council's Maternity Clinic
which is actually greater than before the war despite
the considerable fall in the population. It is interesting
to compare some statistics of the position in 1938, the
last normal pre-war vear, and in 1947:
1938
1947
Expectant mothers 230 ... 737
Attendances at Clinics 965 ... 3,888
The Clinic has always prided itself on its record for the early attendance of mothers for ante-natal care which has now been given an added fillip by the necessity for early booking for the confinement:
