it does not call for special comment. It is, however,
interesting to report that there are seven wells in the
borough. Two of them have not been used for some
years: samples from the remainder have proved
satisfactory except that in one case there was evidence
of past pollution. Two of the wells are used
as a supplementary supply for industrial purposes,
two are attached to the Council's Public Baths, and
the other one is attached to a local hospital and is
used for all purposes.
28 certificates were issued in respect of the satisfactory
supply of water to 144 new houses.
Notice was sent to the Metropolitan Water Board
of observed waste of water in 676 cases.
Rent Restriction Acts.—As a result of applications
by tenants and following inspections of their
houses, 25 certificates of disrepair were issued under
the above Acts.
Rats and Mice.—Investigations were made into
223 complaints of rat infestation received during the
year and in most cases tests of the drainage of the
premises affected were carried out by the drainage
staff under the supervision of the sanitary inspectors.
The two rodent operatives were fully employed
during the year and baiting and poisoning were
carried out on 445 premises with highly satisfactory
results.
Baiting of the sewers was undertaken during April
and again in December. In all 1,079 sewer manholes
were baited with positive results in 634 cases and it
is estimated that at least 2,000 rats were killed.
