+ covering such small matters as pocket money and fares
I understand from the Borough Treasurer that the amount
paid out in these grants was £1,437.
After three and a half years experience of the
scheme there is little doubt that it has done much to
attain the primary objective of attracting patients
to have early treatment which they might have otherwise
refused on economic considerations, but there
are, however, certain defects in the scheme. It is
limited in scope and does not include the chronic,
advanced and non-pulmonary cases. Incapacity for
work and not probable future capacity might be made
the criterion for eligibility. The present system of
dispensing financial assistance through the Government
scheme or through the Social Welfare organisation,
depending on prognosis, is undesirable on
psychological grounds. If one body were responsible
for all the forms of financial assistance this would
be obviated.
Mass Radiography. The L.C.C. Mass Radiography
unit was not available in the Borough during
the year.
