TUBERCULOSIS.
During the year 90 new cases of Tuberculosis were
notified and 725 patients were recorded on the register.
In the accompanying graph it is interesting
to note that the incidence rate during the war years
1941-45 rose to 2.6, but that in 1945-46 it appears to
have fallen again, but has not reached the incidence
level of the late 1930's. Although it is recognised
that an increase in this disease has occurred generally
throughout the country, it has, to some extent, been
influenced by the introduction of Mass Radiography
and the use of service examinations which have
brought to light cases which, in the years prior to
the war, would have remained undetected. With the
return to peacetime and to improved living conditions
generally, a further fall in the incidence rate
can be accomplished. The death rate during the years
referred to above did not rise to quite the same
degree and the figure of .7 is much the same as in
previous years except for the rise in 1940-41.
