Disinfestation.
Disinfestation of bugs was effected in the following
houses :
1938 1937 1936
L.C.C. and Borough Council
tenements 18 21 6
Other houses 429 487 380
Advantage was taken to destroy, by request, a
large quantity of old infested furniture from the
houses in question. Disinfestation was also carried
out in a number of other cases, such as ants, slugs,
silverfish, woodworms, fleas and beetles. The
furniture of 43 families removing to Borough Council
tenements was disinfested by hydrocyanic acid gas
by contractors in course of transit from the
previous homes, the bedding being treated by steam
at the Council's Disinfecting Station at the same
time.
Sulphur, Vermicine, Slatford and Ris powder were
used for room disinfestation according to the
circumstances of the case. Heavy naphtha was also
used in some instances as well as for the disinfestation
of furniture. Apart from the hydrocyanic gas
treatment of furniture, all the disinfestation work is
carried out by the Council's employees.
Spraying Machines.
A small stock of spraying machines is kept for
issue on loan, with a quantity of insecticide, to residents
desirous of following up and completing the disinfestation
of their rooms. The sprayers were lent
on 206 occasions during the year, as compared with
293 in 1937.
