TUBERCULOSIS DISPENSARY.
The Tuberculosis Dispensary for the Borough is
provided under agreement by the London Chest
Hospital and is shared with the Hackney Borough
Council. A full report on its work by Dr. H. T. Howell,
the Clinical Tuberculosis Officer, appears on page 105.
Dr. Howell makes some striking observations and
suggestions concerning the difficulties in securing
earlier diagnosis of Tuberculosis and his report also
contains some interesting figures with regard to the
local Tuberculosis notification and mortality rates.
WORK OF TUBERCULOSIS VISITORS.
The two Tuberculosis Visitors paid 5,021 visits of
enquiry and advice with regard to the welfare of
tuberculous patients in the Borough. In addition
they made 216 futile calls owing to patients being
out. Having regard to the character of the district
and the poverty of so many of the patients, their
task is a difficult one but they are able to carry
out useful educational work with regard to
preventive measures and no doubt their visits have
a beneficial psychological result in encouraging
patients.
TUBERCULOSIS CARE COMMITTEE.
The Sub-Committee of the Public Health Committee
has functioned during the year as the local
Tuberculosis Care Committee, dealing with such matters
as grants of extra nourishment, provision of
special treatment, etc.
SUPPLY OF SPUTUM OUTFITS.
During the year 34 sputum flasks were distributed
to patients. 17 sputum tins, with 598 cardboard
refills were distributed to patients for use indoors.
