TENEMENT HOUSES.
The number of houses on the register as being let
in lodgings or occupied by members of more than one
family was 270 ; 1,473 visits of inspection were made
to these houses, and arising out of such visits 463
notices were served.
RENT AND MORTGAGE INTEREST
RESTRICTIONS (AMENDMENT) ACT, 1933.
During the year one application for a certificate
as to the state of repair of a house was received,
and granted.
WATER SUPPLY TO NEW HOUSES.
During the year 382 new houses were certified as
having a proper and sufficient water supply.
SMOKE NUISANCE.
During the year, 29 formal observations of smoke
shafts were made, and 1 intimation notice was
served.
These occasions only related to industrial premises.
The Council has no special powers with regard to the
most prolific cause of atmospheric impurity—the
ordinary domestic chimney.
NOISE.
I welcome the provision contained in the L.C.C.
(General Powers) Act, 1937, to deal in some small
measure with the serious nuisance of noise.
RATS AND MICE (DESTRUCTION) ACT, 1919.
No formal notices were served under the Act
during the year. A number of complaints as to rat
infestation have been investigated and dealt with
and occupiers of premises have been advised in the
