At the beginning of the year, the routine disinfection
of rooms after infectious disease was discontinued
in the South, West and North wards. In
July, it was also abandoned in the remaining (East)
ward and the week-end attendance of one of the
disinfectors was discontinued at the same time.
Room disinfection will in future only be carried out
in cases of Tuberculosis, Typhoid fever, Smallpox,
and other special circumstances.
The increase in the amount of disinfection, notwithstanding
the above mentioned change, is due to
greater activity in dealing with verminous conditions.
The articles destroyed included a large quantity of
old and verminous furniture weighing in all over
18 tons.
Disinfestation.
Disinfestation of bugs was effected in the following
houses :

In addition 8 houses on Clearance Areas were
dealt with, as well as a large quantity of infested
furniture at various houses. Disinfestation was also
carried out in a number of other cases, such as ants,
fleas and beetles. The furniture of 90 families
removing to Borough Council tenements was disinfested
by hydrocyanic acid gas by contractors in
course of transit from their previous homes, the
bedding being treated by steam at the Council's
Disinfecting Station at the same time.
As in the previous year, sulphur, Vermicine and
Slatford were used for room disinfestation according
to the circumstances of the case. Heavy naphtha
was also used in some instances as well as for
the disinfestation of furniture. Apart from the
