TUBERCULOSIS DISPENSARY.
The Tuberculosis Dispensary for the Borough is
provided under agreement by the London Chest
Hospital and is shared with the Hackney Borough
Council. A full report on the work of the Dispensary,
by Dr. H. T. Howell, the Clinical Tuberculosis
Officer, appears in the appendix to this report on
page 109. I would direct particular attention to
Dr. Howell's remarks on page 110 on the social aspect
of Tuberculosis. Having regard to his very considererable
experience in dealing with Tuberculosis, his
comments and recommendations are entitled to
serious consideration. Most of his proposals are
matters for the London County Council and it is
to be hoped that action on these lines will be taken
by that body in the early future.
WORK OF TUBERCULOSIS VISITORS.
The two Tuberculosis Visitors paid 4,453 visits of
enquiry and advice with regard to the welfare of
tuberculous patients in the Borough. The reduced
number of visits was owing to the illness of one of the
visitors. In addition they made 66 futile calls owing
to patients being out. In the course of their work
they endeavour to persuade patients to adopt such
hygienic manner of life as is practicable by separate
sleeping accommodation, safe collection and disposal
of sputum, etc. They also make economic enquiries
on behalf of the L.C.C. in connection with sanatorium
treatment, etc.
TUBERCULOSIS CARE COMMITTEE.
The Sub-Committee of the Public Health Committee
has functioned during the year as the local
Tuberculosis Care Committee, dealing with such matters
as grants of extra nourishment, provision of
special treatment, etc.
