Sixteen cases were notified as Puerperal Pyrexia,
and were treated at the following Hospitals :—
Bethnal Green (8), Mothers' (1), London (4), Northwestern
(1). The remaining 2 cases were treated at
home by a doctor connected with the Salvation
Army Midwifery Service.
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM, &c.
Fourteen notifications of Ophthalmia Neonatorum
were received during the year. Six of the patients
were treated at home, 3 received treatment at St.
Margaret's Hospital, 5 at the Bethnal Green Hospital.
The Health Visitors paid 68 visits to cases. Eleven
of the cases cleared up without any impairment of
vision being reported : one child died, another was
still under treatment at the end of the year, while
in the remaining case, the first for many years, the
child is believed to have become blind.
16 reports were also received from Medical Officers
of the London County Council concerning newborn
babies suffering from inflammation of the
eyes. These cases were also visited by the Health
Visitors. The district nurses treated 36 cases of
discharging eyes in young infants, paying 493 visits
for the purpose.
CHILD LIFE PROTECTION.
Under the Transfer of Powers (London) Order,
1933, the duties of the London County Council under
the Children Acts were transferred to the Metropolitan
Borough Councils. At the end of the year, there
were 15 foster mothers and 18 foster children on
the register in the Borough. The children are
visited regularly by the Health Visitors.
