There were 2 sessions a week, and 21,715 attendances
at the Welfare Centre in connection with Milk
Grants.
During the year the following quantities of milk
were issued to necessitous mothers :—
Tuberculin Tested Milk 8,263 galls.
Dried Milk 32,836 pkts.
together with medicines, etc. The approximate cost
of milk given in this way was £3,205.
Although the number of grants has not increased
very much, there have been changes in the grants ;
increased quantities being allowed and liquid milk
being used instead of dried milk in many cases.
The arrangement with the L.C.C. whereby that
authority pays for the milk supplied to mothers
and children who are on Public Assistance, was
continued during the year, the refund amounting
to £280. The substantial reduction in this amount
is due to the transfer of many families to the care
of the Unemployment Assistance Board. The
Scheme involves a great deal of clerical labour which
might well be reduced if the L.C.C. would allow us
to adopt a simpler method of accounting in the
matter.
SUPPLY OF DRIED MILKS, Etc.
Apart from the milk issued free or at half-price,
dried milk of various brands, labelled specially to
the Council's directions to avoid the use of trade
names, is sold to the mothers a little above cost
price. The amount sold during the year was as
follows
Dried Milk 8,806 pkts.
NURSING ASSISTANCE.
A scheme of home nursing has been in operation
for some years by arrangement with a voluntary
organisation, the Shoreditch and Bethnal Green
Nursing Association.
