The total number of attendances and the systematic examinations
number 7,046* and 3,297 respectively. We consider
frequent examination of the highest importance and essential in
determining the progress of a patient, his fitness for work, or
the necessity for alteration of treatment. It will be seen by
comparing the above figures, that we average one examination
for just over two attendances.
The attendances at the Artificial Pneumothorax clinic number
988, compared with 775 for the previous year. In comparing
these totals, however, it should be remembered that as we did
not take over the work of " refills " until April, 1936, last year's
figures covered a period of nine months only.
171 of our patients were admitted to Sanatorium or Hospital
under the tuberculosis scheme. This figures does not include
cases admitted to the London County Council General Hospitals.
No one in the early stage of the disease or offering a reasonable
hope of such improvement as will enable him to return to work,
is refused sanatorium treatment, and the waiting period is usually
reasonable.
In conclusion I would like to thank the Medical Officers of
Health, the Hospital Physicians and Surgeons, the Resident
Mcdieal Officer and the Hospital Secretary for their kindly help
and advice, and the Dispensary Staff for their efficient work and
loyal support.
II. TYLFORD HOWELL.
25th March, 1938.
*These and other figures include Hackney patients
attending the Dispensary.
