SOCIAL WELFARE.
There has been very little change in the social
circumstances of the residents in the Borough during
the year. Unemployment, short time and low
wages characterise the economic position of a large
section of the population and this is naturally
reflected in a rather low standard of life.
The administration of public assistance is in the
hands of the London County Council. I have been
furnished, by the courtesy of the local Public
Assistance Officer, with the following figures cncerning
public assistance granted during the year:

Number of Persons Resident in Betiinal Green in Receipt of Out-Relief

Week EndingMenWomenChildren under 16Total PersonsTotal Cases
2. 1. 371,1321,5651,2193,9161,985
26. 6. 379301,3858433,1581,757
25. 12. 378871,3357142,9361,708

Although there has been some improvement during
the year, the large amount of unemployment and
poverty in the Borough is indicated by the considerable
number of persons receiving public assistance,
which was 2,936 at the end of the year.
