The Public Analyst has furnished me with the
following report on his work during the year :—
Annual Report of the Public Analyst.
During the year, 1936, 724 samples were examined
under the Food and Drugs (Adulteration) Act. All samples
were submitted by the Inspectors. No sample under the Act
was submitted by the Public.
Ninety-seven of the samples were purchased informally.
Nineteen samples were found to be adulterated, 16
formal and 3 informal. In addition 62 other samples were
of inferior quality or doubtful purity.
The adulteration was at the rate of 2.6 per cent. as
compared with 4.1 per cent. for the whole of London, and
5.5 per cent. for the whole of England and Wales in 1935.
The rate of adulteration in the Borough for the past ten years was as follows :—
Year | No. of Samples examined | Percentage of adulteration |
---|---|---|
1936 | 724 | 2.6 |
1935 | 704 | 8.2 |
1934 | 735 | 6.1 |
1933 | 738 | 7.7 |
1932 | 718 | 7.9 |
1931 | 749 | 7.1 |
1930 | 737 | 6.5 |
1929 | 750 | 8.0 |
1928 | 731 | 9.3 |
1927 | 728 | 9.2 |
Average | 731 | 7.3 |
The adulteration is the lowest recorded for several years.
The number of samples examined was at the rate of
7.2 per 1,000 of the population, as compared with 9.9 per
1,000 for the whole of London and 3.6 per 1,000 for the whole
of England and Wales, in 1935.
Three hundred and ninety-three samples of milk were
examined during the year, of which seven samples or 1.8 per
cent. were found to be adulterated and fifty-four other
samples were of doubtful purity or inferior quality.
