MATERNAL MORTALITY.
During the year, the following deaths were noted:
1. Toxœmia during pregnancy following
las and nephritis.
2. Pyaemia following abortion.
3. Mammary abscess and pulmonary embolism.
4. Myocarditis accelerated by obstetric shock and
anaemia.
Only the first three cases have been counted as
Maternal Mortality for statistical purposes, giving a
rate of 2.1 per 1,000 total births (live and still). In
England and Wales the rate was 3.81 per 1,000
births.
INFANTILE MORTALITY.
One hundred and twenty-eight deaths of Bethnal
Green infants under one year of age are recorded
as having taken place during the year. This is
equal to a rate of infantile mortality of 98 per 1,000
births. The infant death rate for London was 66
and for England and Wales as a whole 59.
