MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE
A comprehensive account of the Council's
maternity and child welfare services and a report
as to their possible extension and improvement,
were contained in a special report which I submitted
to the Public Health Committee, at their request,
at the beginning of the year, and which appears in
the appendix (p 133). All the recommendations
I then made were subsequently approved by the
Committee and the Council, as follows : —
(a) That an additional health visitor be appointed.
This has been done.
(b) That a welfare centre should be established as
soon as possible in the North Ward, to be
followed in due course by one to serve the
South Ward and one the farthest portion of
the East Ward.
Every endeavour has been made to secure
a suitable site for the proposed centre and
negotiations are now proceeding.
(c) That provision be made at the proposed new
centre in the North Ward for the installation
of a Dental Clinic and that meantime arrangements
be made for a third weekly attendance
of one of the dental surgeons at the Cornwall
Road Centre.
The first part is dependent upon (b).
The second has been carried out.
(d) That the principal hospitals outside the
Rorough providing midwifery for Betlmal
Green mothers be asked to enter into an
arrangement with the Council's ante-natal
clinics whereby mothers, unable or unwilling
to obtain ante-natal supervision at the
hospital, may obtain it at the Council's antenatal
clinics.
