outfits, home help or milk grant. These remarks, of course,
apply to hospitals out of the Borough. In the case of Bethnal
Green Hospital we are already in fairly close touch, and the same
arguments do not quite apply.
While therefore the Maternal Mortality rate is relatively
favourable to the Borough, I do not regard this as any reason
for relaxing or even stabilising our efforts. Bather should we
seek, by an extension of the services already found so beneficial,
still further to reduce the toll of sickness and death among mothers.

Summary of Recommendations.
The following is a cursory outline of my recommendations :
(a) That an additional Health Visitor should be appointed.
(b) That a Welfare Centre should be established as soon
as possible in the North Ward, to be followed in due
course by one to serve the South Ward and one the
farthest portion of the East Ward.
(c) That provision be made at the proposed new Centre
in the North Ward for the installation of a Dental Clinic,
and that meantime arrangements be made for a third
weekly attendance of one of the Dental Surgeons at
the Cornwall Road Centre.
(d) That the principal hospitals outside the borough providing
midwifery for Bethnal Green mothers be asked
to enter into an arrangement with the Borough Council's
ante-natal clinics whereby mothers unable or unwilling
to obtain ante-natal supervision at the hospital may
obtain it at the Council's ante-natal clinics, the results
of such examinations being reported to the hospitals
concerned.
(c) That the services of the Obstetric Consultants on the
Council's panel be made available when approved by
the Medical Officer of Health for any special difficulty
or emergency arising in the course of pregnancy or during
the puerperium and that local medical practitioners be
notified accordingly.
(f) That the services of the Home Helps be made available
to mothers who are confined in hospital or who are taken
ill during pregnancy or shortly after confinement.
(g) That a suitable poster be issued drawing attention
to the Council's Maternity and Child Welfare services.
