Scheme:
Ministry of Health confirm Clearance
Orders. Clearance and
redevelopment proceeding.
In addition to these schemes, it should also be
mentioned that in 1934, the Usk Street and Warley
Street area (comprising 42 houses and a population
of 297 persons) and the Charlotte Street and Turin
Street area (comprising 111 houses and 607 persons)
were notified to the L.C.C. and it is understood that
they will be dealt with in due course as parts of larger
areas. Another large area (Pott Street, comprising
146 houses and 720 persons) is also awaiting redevelopment
by the L.C.C. There is, therefore, every
prospect that within a few years, a large part of the
bad housing in the borough will be demolished and
hygienic modern tenements provided by either the
Borough Council or the County Council in their
place. It appears unfortunately necessary that practically
all the new accommodation shall take the
form of high block dwellings which, however admirable
in their structural fitness and internal conveniences,
are nevertheless very detrimental to health
in some circumstances. Women and young children,

disabilities, in fact all except strong healthy adults
