During 1935, Waterloo House, formerly used as a
Public Assistance " Institution," was closed and it
has since been demolished. Consequently any
"institutional relief" afforded to Bethnal Green
residents apart from Bethnal Green Hospital is now
provided out of the Borough. Children are still
cared for at the Leytonstone Children's Homes.
I am informed by the Education Officer that the
average number of necessitous school children provided with meals of some kind at public elementary
schools in the Borough during the year was 872
(milk), and 51 (dinners). This number of children
is surprisingly small in view of the widespread
poverty in the Borough. The number of children
obtaining cheap milk under the scheme of the Milk
Marketing Board is not known.
