SANITATION AND HOUSING.
The following figures give a bare outline of the
work of the sanitary inspectors during the year.
Outstanding features are the welcome reduction in
the number of infectious disease visits and the substantial
fall in the number of drainage work inspections
while on the other hand more house to house
inspections were made and more visits paid to factories
and workshops. One figure which tends to
increase from year to year is that of "complaints,"
a reflection of two things : (a) the ageing and very
unsatisfactory character of much of the housing
in the borough, and (b) the rising sanitary standards
of the people who rightly refuse to tolerate bad conditions.
