is remarkable that such few cases of vermin are
reported, and speaks well for the care taken by mothers
to keep their children clean despite adverse circumstances.
Rooms were disinfested of vermin in 432 cases.
Scabies or Itch.
Sixty-five children suffering from this disease
were excluded from the Elementary Schools. In
addition, 23 cases of Scabies were reported by the
London Hospital, one by the Mile End Hospital, one
by the Queen's Hospital, and one by the London
Jewish Hospital. In all of these cases the bedding
and clothing was disinfected. 44 rooms were also
fumigated after Scabies.
Personal Cleansing Station.
The Personal Cleansing Station is becoming better
known to the public as part of the Council's considered
scheme for the destruction of insect pests, although
it has been little used by women. The baths are
available for women on Wednesdays, when a woman
attendant is engaged, the other days being allocated to
men. During the year 211 men, 15 women and 8
children had 235 baths and their clothing was disinfected
for vermin, and 42 men, 39 women and 6 young
children had treatment with sulphur ointment, in
addition to baths and disinfection, on a total of 186
occasions, for Scabies.
By arrangement with the Shoreditch and Stepney
Borough Councils, residents in those boroughs have
been dealt with at the Personal Cleansing Station
during the year as follows:—
Persons Baths
Scabies 24 65
Vermin nil nil
These figures are included in the foregoing figures
of total work done at the Station.
